The square is named after Adam Clark, a Scottish engineer who played a key role in several 19th-century projects, including the regulation of the Danube River.
One of the square’s iconic landmarks is the Kilometre Zero statue by Miklós Borsos — the point from which all road distances in Hungary are measured.
Another notable feature is the Buda Castle Funicular, part of the UNESCO World Heritage, which connects the square to the Castle District above. The funicular was initiated by Ödön Széchenyi and constructed between 1868 and 1870.
Count András Hadik of Futak rose to fame as a field marshal under Empress Maria Theresa and later served as head of the Imperial War Council from 1774 until his death in 1790.
The statue was erected in the Castle District at the small square where Úri Street meets Szentháromság Street, initiated by former Hadik Hussars.
It stands as a tribute to the Hungarian hussars and their legendary general.
The most important square of the Buda Castle District, located at the intersection of Tárnok Street, Szentháromság Street, Országház Street, and Hess András Square.
On the corner of Tárnok and Szentháromság Streets stands the Baroque-style Old Town Hall. In front of it, a decorative fountain fed by spring water was built in 1718, featuring the statue of Pallas Athena, protector of the city.
By the end of the 19th century, the local parish church was transformed into the Coronation Church of Our Lady — today known as Matthias Church.
Founded in 1827 by Ferenc Ruszwurm after completing his pastry studies in Vienna, this iconic confectionery quickly gained fame — even members of the Habsburg family were regular guests.
The interior still features original 19th-century furniture and décor, offering visitors a true journey back in time.
Ruszwurm is especially renowned for its traditional Hungarian desserts, such as krémes (custard slice), Dobos cake, and Somlói galuska (a layered sponge cake dessert).
Perhaps the most iconic element of Budapest’s skyline and one of the city’s symbols. The current neo-Gothic structure was designed by Frigyes Schulek in 1890, built upon the foundations of an 18th-century fortification and its bastions.
Thanks to its decorative lighting, introduced in 1928, it has also become a defining feature of the cityscape by night.
The Church of the Assumption in Buda Castle is one of the earliest and most complete examples of classic Gothic church architecture in Hungary.
From the 14th century onward, following coronation ceremonies in Székesfehérvár, kings were publicly proclaimed here — including Louis the Great and Sigismund of Luxembourg.
Beginning in 1370, Louis the Great transformed the church into a Gothic hall church. Its current form was shaped between 1873 and 1896.
The square is named after the statue of John of Capistrano, erected in 1922.
In the Middle Ages, part of the city’s oldest marketplace — known as Saturday Market due to the weekly markets held on Saturdays — was located here, around the Church of Mary Magdalene (formerly the Garrison Church).
Most of the buildings standing today, including the Old Town Hall and the Museum of Military History, were built in the 19th century.
The oldest building on Kapisztrán Square, the late Gothic Magdolna Tower is now the only medieval tower in Buda to have survived history in relatively intact and original condition.
Visitors can still enter the interior from Úri Street through the temple’s former main entrance — a Copf-style (late Baroque) vestibule built for the coronation of Emperor Francis I. Climbing the stairs to the top floor rewards you with a stunning panoramic view of the city.
Founded on November 25, 1802, by Count Ferenc Széchényi, the National Széchényi Library was Hungary’s first national public institution.
At the time of its founding, the collection included around 15,000 printed books, more than 1,200 manuscripts, hundreds of maps, coats of arms, engravings — and even a coin collection.
Since April 1985, the library has been housed in Building F of Buda Castle.
The limestone pedestal stands 560 cm tall, while the bronze equestrian statue reaches 470 cm. The bronze reliefs on the sides of the pedestal depict the storming of the trenches at Zenta and the famous cavalry charge.
Two additional statues representing captured Ottoman soldiers flank the monument as secondary figures.
The statue was erected in 1896 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Zenta, in which the allied Christian forces, led by Prince Eugene of Savoy, defeated the Ottoman army of Sultan Mustafa II.
